World Autism Awareness Day

Meet Brian, part of the SmartHer News family.

Brian Duff

  • 11-years-old; diagnosed with autism at age 2.
  • Big brother to 6-month-old Ethan.
  • Favorite Superheroes: Optimus Prime & Superman
  • Non-verbal. In fact, 30% of people with autism “never learn to speak more than a few words”, according to a new Boston University study.
“Even though Brian’s non-verbal, he has a lot to say! People should know autism isn’t just people who are good at math, like you see in the movies. Autism varies greatly. Each person with autism is unique.”

Ben Duff, SmartHer News tech-guru, and loving father of Brian, who's been a part of our meetings from the beginning!

What Is Autism?

The CDC defines autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as “a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.”

Autism: What We Know

  • Occurs in all racial, ethnic, & socioeconomic groups
  • More common among boys (about 4.5 times) than among girls.
  • 2 million individuals in the U.S. & tens of millions worldwide have autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Autism
What We Don’t Know:

  • NO agreement among the scientific community on the cause.
  • NO official medical test to diagnose autism. It’s often diagnosed after other medical conditions are ruled out based on behavioral developmental delays.
