Why This Matters

Andrew McCabe’s firing is part of a larger investigation with high stakes. The DOJ Inspector General is looking into whether or not members of the FBI tried to unfairly influence investigations based on political beliefs. If the conclusion is yes, that means corruption at the highest law enforcement agency in America. Answer: TBD

  • Served more than 20 years in FBI, rose from street agent in NYC to Deputy Director in DC.
  • Stepped-down from Deputy Director position in January a allowed to stay part of FBI on terminal leave.
  • Fired Friday, March 16, 2018, 2 days ahead of his expected retirement on March 18th.

Why McCabe Was Fired:

  • Agreed by an additional DOJ members (Office of Professional Responsibility a Counsel appointed by Obama).
  • Ultimately decision up to Attorney General (President Trump appointee).

  • IG: ‘mission is to detect and deter waste, fraud, abuse, and misconduct in DOJ programs and personnel’
  • Major Tasks: Reviewing FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server & Trump/Russia meddling.

  • When did IG & others make recommendation to fire McCabe?
  • Timing matters: Did recommendation come recently, as catalyst behind Friday night firing? Or weeks ago and timing chosen by Attorney General Sessions right before McCabe’s retirement?

  • Says his firing is part of Trump Administration’s “ongoing war with FBI and special counsel investigation”.
  • Insinuates he supports former FBI Dir James Comey claim that Pres. Trump told him to drop the investigation into Russia collusion a amongst other potentially unethical or illegal actions.
