Just Under 2 Years Ago…

“Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He’s playing the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat.”

Mitt Romney, Remarks,A University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute, March 3, 2016

Also This…

“The last election should have been won, except Romney choked like a dog. He choked.”

President Trump, then "candidate" during campaign speech Rome, New York, April 12, 2016

Fast Forward:
Election to Endorsement

  • President Trump & Mitt Romney dined and golfed together shortly after Trump won election.
  • Romney floated as potential cabinet member in Trump administration (didn’t happen).
  • Report: Trump encouraged Romney to run for Utah seat (Salt Lake Tribune).

Why It Matters

  • President Trump has repeatedly commented on wanting more Republicans in Congress, in part to help the White House agenda.
  • Romney has a strong chance of keeping a Senate seat held by Republican Orin Hatch for 40 years (!) – “Red”.
  • However, it remains a question if Romney would support President Trump’s priorities.

How Can A Former Gov. of Massachusetts Run for Senate in Utah?

  • Mitt Romney moved to Utah after losing the 2012 Presidential Election.
  • Utah law stipulates a Senate candidate has to be 30-years-old, a Utah resident when elected and a citizen of the U.S. for at least 9 years.
