18.04.16 Comey

April 16, 2018

He is morally unfit to be president.

Ahead of the release of his book, former FBI director James Comey sat down with ABC News to make HIS case against the President.

Flip: Does It Matter?

Comey on Pres. Trump:

Likens him to a mob boss & offers few kind words: “This president is unethical, and untethered to truth and institutional values.”

Stops short of calling him a criminal: ‘I have one perspective on the behavior I saw, which while disturbing and violating basic norms of ethical leadership, may fall short of being illegal.’

Pres. Trump on Comey:

“James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR.”

“He is a weak and untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a terrible Director of the FBI.”

“It was my great honor to fire James Comey!”

Is Comey’s Book A Game Changer?

Legal experts question whether Comey’s words could come back to hurt him or the FBI’s Russia’s probe.

What To Watch For:
If what Comey says in an interview or book is inconsistent with his previous public statement, he may discredit himself and potentially impact current investigations.

Comey’s tell-all book has yet to hit stores, but expect to see it (and him) all over the headlines this week. Here’s a recap of how we got here:

SmartHER Recap

  • July 2016: FBI Dir. James Comey says the FBI’s investigation of Hillary Clinton and her use of private server revealed no crimes, but was “extremely careless.”
  • Oct 2016: In response to new evidence, FBI reopens inquiry.
  • Nov 2016: Days before the election, Comey says new evidence did not change the FBI’s conclusion – no case against Clinton.
  • Jan 2017: Comey, an Obama holdover, keeps his job as the FBI Director.
  • May 2017: President Trump fires Comey citing his handling of the probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server.
  • June 2017: During his infamous Senate testimony, Comey accuses the President of asking him to pledge his loyalty to him & “lift the cloud” off of the Russia probe. Comey also admits he gave his secret memos detailing his interactions with President Trump to a friend in hopes it would prompt the appointment of a special counsel in the FBI’s Russia investigation.
