New federal rule will require all newly manufactured cars to come equipped with backup cameras to prevent backup related accidents.

Each year “backover crashes” result in 200+ fatalities; more than 50% are kids under 5 & adults over 70.

Dr. Greg Gulbransen, a pediatrician who accidentally killed his 2-year-old son Cameron when he backed over him with his vehicle in 2002. His work led to Cameron Gulbransen Kids. Transportation Safety Act of 2007', which eventually led to this new rule.

Will It Work? Is it Enough?

According to a 2017 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) study, backup cameras reduced backup related crashes by 17%.

HOWEVER, a 2018 IIHS study found that cars equipped with backup cameras AND rear breaking systems with parking sensors can reduce backup related crash rates by 75%.

Backup crashes account for about 2% of all passenger vehicle accidents, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Read more here:
