FBI Faces Judgment Day in Clinton Email Probe

The Dept of Justice’s watchdog report blasts Former FBI Director James Comey & the bureau’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails during the 2016 presidential election.

500+ pages condensed.

  • Fmr. FBI Dir. James Comey was found ‘insubordinate” in holding a 2016 news conf. announcing FBI would not recommend criminal charges in Clinton investigation.
  • Criticized Comey’s decision to notify Congress FBI was reopening Clinton email probe 9 days before election.
  • Comey’s actions “negatively impacted the perception of FBI.”
Watchdog’s report also found several instances of FBI officials criticizing Trump,A but says biases did not compromise FBI’s work.

Example: texts between FBI agents Peter Strzok & Lisa Page:
  • Page to Strzok: “[Trump’s] not ever going to become president, right? Right!?”
  • Strzok: “No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it.”

“I do not agree with all of the inspector general’s conclusions, but I respect the work of his office and salute its professionalism.”
Fmr. FBI Dir. James Comey

“(Report) reaffirmed the president’s suspicions about Comey’s conduct and the political bias among some of the members of the FBI.”A
Press Secretary Sarah Sanders

“But my emails.”

18-month investigation reveals how entangled FBI was in 2016 election.

ConservativesA challenged the FBI’s trustworthiness, letting Clinton off the hook & Liberals blamed the bureau for mishandling the Clinton probe, costing her the election.

Bottom line: Watchdog’s findings give neither side total vindication.

The Inspector General's report made no recommendation of leveling any charges against Comey, but it gave both Democrats and Republicans plenty of ammunition to criticize him & the FBI. Click for what they are saying.

  • Watchdog sees errors, not bias, in Comey’s Clinton Probe:
  • Lawmakers accuse FBI of ‘destructive level of animus’ following release of IG report:
    • Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina: alarmed, angered, and deeply disappointed by the Inspector General’s finding of numerous failures by DOJ and FBI and noted that the report showed an alarming and destructive level of animus displayed by top officials at the FBI.
    • Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois:A This report makes clear that FBI Director Comey and FBI personnel failed to follow the rules, and in doing so, hurt Hillary Clinton”s campaign and helped Donald Trump”s.
    • Senate Minority Leader & New York Democrat ChuckA Schumer:A Comey had made “an error of judgement, but not an error of credibility.”
    • House Judiciary Committee Chairman & Virginia Republican Bob Goosdlatte: report “confirms that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received special treatment from the Obama Justice Department during its investigation of her use of a private email server.”
