INVASION OF THE SPAM CALLS

Spam & robocalls have increased more than 40% since January.A Why & what can you do about it?

It’s Not Just You

It’s estimated that at least 20 billion robocallsA were made so far in 2018.

Robocalls were the #1 FTC complaint (4.5M) in 2017 – that figure doesn’t include the 2.5M live caller complaints.

4 WAYS (TO TRY) TO MAKE THEM STOP

1. Don’t answerA unknown #s.

2. If you pick up, don’t engage.

3. Utilize built-in alert features orA third-party app to enable spam notifications &/or call blocking.

4. Report unwanted calls & register your #s w/A FTC’s Do Not Call List.

And Why Are Some Calls in Chinese Anyway?A

  • Chinese-language spam calls are targeting immigrants, pretending to be from the Chinese consulate.
  • Don’t speak Chinese? Robocallers don’t care. It costs them virtually nothing; they just need to reach one Chinese-speaking person.
  • NYPD estimates $3M has been stolen from this roboscam.

The law can't catch up with tech, but prosecutions are up. In May, the FCC slapped a $120M fine on a man who made nearly 100M robocalls from 2015 – 2016. FCC said it was "one of the largest – and most dangerous – illegal robocalling campaigns" ever.
