  • Saturday, as Pres. Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) took office, the gov’t closed its massive asylum shelter in Tijuana due to sanitation concerns & moved thousands away from border.
  • AMLO signed an agreement with El Salvador, Guatemala, & Honduras in hopes of creating a joint plan to control the flow of U.S. asylum seekers at the border.

  • On Friday, a U.S. federal court denied the Trump administration’s efforts to limit asylum protections to only those who enter the U.S. legally.
  • The federal gov’t will keep nearly 6,000 U.S. troops at the southern border, extending its previous Dec. 15th end-date to Jan. 31. To date, the cost is $72M.
Current Events

Pres. Trump has said he is willing to extend his previous deadline for a $5B border wall deal in the wake of President George H.W. Bush's passing. Previously, he threatened a gov't shutdown on December 7th if Congress did not agree to his terms.
