Have no doubt: We will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing.

President Biden on the death of three service members and “many wounded” due to a drone attack at a U.S. base in Jordan (near the border shared with Syria). President Biden went on to say “… we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.”

Why It Matters: This is the first time American service members were killed, and the first time a U.S. position was targeted in Jordan (to our knowledge) during this series of recent drone attacks.

Background: Since the October 7th terrorist attack in Israel by Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists, more than 130 attacks by Iranian-backed militants have been launched on U.S. positions in Syria and Iraq. While service members have been injured in these attacks, none have been killed.

Important: The U.S. State Dept. has designated Iran a state-sponsor of terrorism since 1984 – meaning the nation funds and support terrorist groups.

What We Know: Central Command released this statement providing more detail on the attack. The base in Jordan (known as Tower 22) housed approx. 350 U.S. Army and Air Force soldiers; at least 34 service members were injured in the attack – 8 of these service members were evacuated to receive “a higher level care.”
