Hand holding the sun
"I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it …"

On this day in 1881, Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross. Known as the "Angel of The Battlefield," she left her high-paying job at the U.S. Patent Office to support Union soldiers. She transported medical supplies, helped former slaves navigate next steps in freedom, located missing soldiers (she lived in a room in her office) and marked thousands of graves. The non-profit is a leader today in securing blood donations and responding to disasters.
