This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen.

Exploration director, maritime archaeologist Mensun Bound, on the discovery of the ship Endurance – more than 100 years after it sank.
  • The ship HMS Endurance was on a mission to explore the South Pole when it became entrapped in ice in January 1915.
  • After living onboard for over nine months, the crew was forced to abandon the ship – which later was crushed by ice and sank.
  • The crew, surviving in frigid temperatures and hostile conditions, found themselves adrift on pack ice and eventually used lifeboats to sail to land (the inhospitable Elephant Island). They were rescued roughly 18 months after their ship had initially become stuck.
  • Why It Matters: One of the most iconic shipwrecks in the entire world has been located in very good condition. According to Bound, “It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation. You can even see ‘Endurance’ arced across the stern, directly below the taffrail … This is a milestone in polar history.”
