We do not see an instantly recognizable David Chipperfield building in different cities, but different David Chipperfield buildings designed specifically for each circumstance.

The citation of the Pritzker Architecture Prize – the utmost honor in architecture – naming British architect David Chipperfield as the 2023 laureate.

What To Know: David Chipperfield has been designing buildings and structures throughout Asia, Europe, and North America for more than 40 years. He places a particular emphasis on integrating the old with the new in a way that allows society to sustainably engage with development. While he has completed 100+ projects, here are a few we found both beautiful and interesting:

  • The Neues Museum (Berlin, Germany, 2009): First constructed in the mid 1800s, the building suffered significant damage during WWII. To restore the major museum, Chipperfield integrated modern architecture to compliment the old; this can be seen in the new main stairwell which is surrounded by walls containing original materials, some of which show wartime blemishes.
  • Procuratie Vecchie (Venice, Italy, 2022): The building, dating back to the 1500s and located in one of the world’s most famous squares, was largely closed off to the public until Chipperfield took on the project. He restored the building and made it to where the original structure could be operational for the general public. It is now multi-functional, with exhibitions, offices, and the headquarters of an organization helping at-risk people and families.
  • Amorepacific Headquarters (Seoul, South Korea, 2017): A building made for South Korea’s largest beauty brand, it is centered around a courtyard to maximize daylight and natural ventilation. Three large urban openings in the building allow for views of the city and nearby mountains to help connect a sense of nature and peace to all areas of the building.
