"... there's been nothing like this in modern times."
Former Buckingham Palace press officer reacts to the news Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will step back from their duties as ‘senior’ royals
- The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the announcement via Instagram, saying they will “step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.” They plan to split their time between the UK and North America in order to provide their family of three “space to focus on the next chapter.”
- Former Buckingham Palace press officer Dickie Arbiter compared the move to King Edward VIII’s 1936 abdication from the throne (in order to marry an American divorcee), noting this type of stepping back is unprecedented in modern times.
- Prince Harry is sixth in line to throne after his father (Prince Charles), brother (Prince William), and his brother’s three children (Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis).
