"This is the new landscape for survivors of sexual assault in America, and this is a new day."
Manhattan District Attorney reacts to former Hollywood heavyweight Harvey Weinstein’s guilty verdict.
- A Manhattan jury found the 67-year-old guilty of sexual assault and rape. He faces up to 29 years in prison, however, he was acquitted of more serious charges that could have landed him in prison for life.
- Weinstein was accused of sexual violence & sexual harassment by 90+ women dating back decades. The trial centered around allegations by two women.
- When asked about Weinstein’s reaction to the verdict, one of his attorneys said that his client was “shocked but stoic” and that “he kept saying over and over again was, ‘I’m innocent. I’m innocent. How could this happen in America?'”
- Why This Matters: While the #MeToo movement led to the downfall of many careers for illegal or inappropriate conduct, few allegations landed a perpetrator in prison. This is different.
