booster shot

Remember when the early vaccine studies came out, it was like nobody gets hospitalized, nobody dies. That clearly is not true.

Chairman of the department of medicine, Dr. Robert Wachter, University of California, San Francisco on the news of breakthrough COVID-19 infections.
  • The U.S. government announced a recommendation of a third booster vaccination shot for mRNA vaccines.
  • Officials left the door open for a booster shot for the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine; the J&J vaccine received emergency use authorization later than the Pfizer and Moderna, and data is still coming on its lasting-effectiveness.
  • Why It Matters: Big picture CDC Dir. Walensky said theres a "concerning decline" about vaccine efficacy against symptomatic and severe illness. However, the CDC believes vaccines (with emergency use authorization) still provide "relatively high protection" against hospitalization and death. Health officials believe the extra shot will help prime the immune system further against the Delta variant.

The New York Times did their own analysis of state data and reported a higher number of breakthrough cases, and severe cases.
