Brazil’s President-Elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after beating the current conservative president, Jair Bolsonaro, by a narrow margin. It is the first time in Brazil’s modern history that a sitting president did not win re-election.

Why It Matters: Brazil is Latin America's biggest economy. President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was president from 2003-2011, was imprisoned for corruption while running for president in 2018. His victory, however, is part of a "wave of recent leftist victories in the region, including Chile, Colombia and Argentina" (The Associated Press).
