Capt Kirk into space

I want to look at that orb and appreciate its beauty and its tenacity …

Actor William Shatner, who at 90 became the oldest person launched into space.
  • Shatner reflected on the anticipation of his journey: "I want to look at that orb and appreciate its beauty and its tenacity … as sustaining this life of ours which allows us to look with awe and wonder of the miracle of space."
  • The former "Captain Kirk" of the popular series "Star Trek" (a science fiction TV series with a space exploration storyline), Shatner experienced a very real – though brief – trip on a Blue Origin spacecraft. The crew did not reach orbit, but just the "edge of space," and had a few moments of weightlessness.
  • William Shatner joined Blue Origin executive (Audrey Powers, Blue Origin’s vice president of mission and flight operations) and two paying customers on this launch.
  • Why It Matters: This is the second trip by Amazon's Jeff Bezos' rocket into space with "regular" people – not trained astronauts – as the race continues towards space tourism.
