There is no winner in a nuclear war.

A Chinese government statement, released by state TV, disclosing China’s plan to send a “peace envoy” to Ukraine and other nations.

What To Know: On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on the phone for the first time since the war in Ukraine began 14 months ago. According to the Chinese government statement released by state TV, President Xi communicated that China would send a peace envoy to Ukraine to help "conduct in-depth communication with all parties on the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis," though it is unclear when the envoy will be sent.

Why It Matters: China has sought to take a neutral stance in the war, aiming to serve as a "mediator." The hour-long phone call between President Xi and President Zelenksy did not mention Russia or President Putin by name, though President Zelensky described the conversation as "long and meaningful."
