Circus Elephant Escapes And Roams Around City

April 17, 2024

Glad it ended well, and as far as I know, the show went on as scheduled.

Sheriff Ed Lester with the Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department after an elephant escaped from a traveling circus performing in the Montana city.

What To Know: The “elderly” elephant, named Viola, was “spooked by a vehicle and escaped briefly” while getting a bath. She roamed around city streets for about 20 minutes before handlers loaded her into a trailer. Viola has escaped at least two other times, in 2010 and 2014, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal welfare group. But no harm was reported for Viola or the city as she explored the area on Tuesday.
