It renews your faith in humanity.

Funeral director Katie Riposta, on the response received after asking for the community’s help planning a “proper sendoff” for a veteran who died alone at a nursing home.

Why It Matters: A local community stepped up to support the cause after a funeral director made an announcement that she needed assistance with a burial for widowed veteran who recently “died alone in a nursing home in Maine.” When former U.S. Marine Gerry Brooks (86) passed, no one claimed his body, and though family attended Brooks’ funeral, “much about Brooks’ life is unknown.” Honors for Brooks included a 21-gun salute thanks to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post, a motorcycle escort courtesy of a veteran-focused non-profit, plus an American flag so large it needed a crane to support it.
