Judge Jackson confirmed as the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

This nomination is confirmed.

Vice President Harris, residing in her role as president of the Senate, on the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Why This Matters: Judge Jackson will become the first black woman in American history to serve on the Supreme Court.

A few details:

  • Judge Jackson will replace outgoing Justice Stephen Breyer.
  • Judge Jackson will not join the court until Justice Breyer's official retirement this summer.
  • All 50 Senate Democrats voted in favor of Judge Jackson, as did 3 Republican lawmakers: Sen. Romney (R-Utah), Sen. Collins (R-Maine), & Sen. Murkowski (R-Alaska). This division of votes along party lines is consistent with previous confirmation votes cast for other recently-nominated Super Court justices.
