Congress Considers Spending Deal; Shutdown Possible Friday

We never want to shut the government down. It’s why I think we need no budget, no pay.

Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) who co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, highlighting that despite a potential government shutdown and furloughs of federal employees, lawmakers would still receive pay.

Why It Matters: Congress faces the potential of a government shutdown on Friday if a spending deal, agreed upon by both the House and the Senate, is not reached. Republicans hold the majority in both chambers and have introduced a CR — continuing resolution — that would temporarily fund the government until September. While Republicans voting along party lines may pass this bill through the House, they do not have enough of a majority in the Senate to push legislation through without some Democratic help.

Interesting To Note: The Constitution requires that both the President of the United States AND lawmakers receive pay regardless of scenario. However, staffers for congressional offices and other support team members do not get paid during a shutdown despite having to work — if their roles are deemed critical. Past precedent had led to employees receiving back pay during these abbreviated periods, and a law passed in 2019 has now made that a requirement.
