For a country that considers itself the gold standard in aviation safety, these numbers are unacceptable, and we must do better.
Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX), chairman of the Subcommittee on Aviation, in his opening remarks during a House hearing about flaws in the nation’s aviation system.
Why It Matters: A House hearing on Tuesday spotlighted concerns about the safety of the U.S. aviation system. Lawmakers questioned aviation officials about aging system infrastructure, air traffic controller shortages and a flawed hiring process.
What To Know:
- The hearing followed a series of aviation incidents, including the deadly midair collision near Washington, D.C., on Jan. 29. Relatives of the victims attended the session as lawmakers pressed for answers. The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating air traffic control’s role in the accidents.
- Rep. Nehls noted that 105 of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) 138 systems are unsustainable, or potentially unsustainable. Paul Rinaldi, a former air traffic controller of 30 years and union leader, testified that the U.S. is no longer the global leader in aviation safety. “We are not even on the world’s podium,” he said.
- Democrats challenged Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) over their decision to cut FAA employees. Sec. Duffy has countered that the employees were probationary and not critical to safety measures. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association has warned of staffing shortfalls over many years.
In response to safety concerns, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a plan to improve FAA hiring, including a 30% pay raise and streamlined process. However, Rep. Nehls added, “While it’s easy to lay blame at the feet of the FAA, and their project management is certainly not blameless, we also have to look at our own shortfalls.” (CNN)
