We are in the fight of our lives, and we are losing.
United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, in opening remarks at COP27. The annual United Nations gathering, which discusses climate change, began on Monday in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Why It Matters: ‘COP’ or ‘Conference of the Parties’ occurs each year between governments who have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreement or the Kyoto Protocol. This gathering comes at a time when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says the world is in “extraordinarily dangerous territory,” think tank Chatham House explains.
The issues that will be focused on during COP27 include greenhouse gas reduction efforts, aiding developing nations in combating loss due to climate change, and “climate financing.”
