Bronx resident, Maridelsa Fana, 50, a school bus driver, who was inside the building at the time of its collapse.

The Big Picture: A corner of a seven-story building in the Bronx, New York crashed to the ground on Monday afternoon. After completing its search of the rubble Monday night, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) reported zero deaths. Two people incurred minor injuries during evacuation.

“From looking at the scene and surveillance footage, it could have been so much worse … For hours, they searched for anyone who may have been trapped or injured. We have confirmed that no one was under that pile.” FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh

The FNDY says they do not know what caused the corner to collapse, and continue to assess the threat to the rest of the building. According to the Department of Buildings, the building is 96 years old and had seven unsafe facade conditions but clarified this did not infer structural issues. The site will be investigated further.

The Bronx is the third most densely populated county in the United States – third only to the counties that represent Manhattan, and Brooklyn.
