Ascension in a Thursday press release on a cyberattack impacting the hospital network, which includes 140 hospitals across 19 states, as well as 40 senior living facilities.

Why It Matters: Hackers targeted Ascension, a major U.S. healthcare entity, causing “several” hospitals to divert ambulances “in order to ensure emergency cases are triaged immediately” (Ascension). As of its Thursday update, the hospital system is dealing with disrupted access to several systems including electronic records and some phone systems. The incident has reportedly been characterized as a ransomware attack (first reported on Wednesday), which entails cybercriminals usually attempting to extort the hospital system by locking computers and stealing data.
