Deadly helicopter crash in India

They served India with utmost diligence. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a helicopter crash that killed 13, including India’s top military general.
  • 13 on board the helicopter died; one survivor is being treated at a military hospital. India's military chief, General Bipin Rawat, and his wife were both killed in the accident, along with other defense personnel.
  • The helicopter crashed in the mountainous town of Coonoor while on its way to a military training college. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
  • General Rawat served for more than four decades and his actions were praised by many, though controversial to others. The prime minister said that General Rawat "was an outstanding soldier. A true patriot, he greatly contributed to modernising our armed forces and security apparatus. His insights and perspectives on strategic matters were exceptional."

Big Picture: The type of helicopter that crashed, a Russian-made Mi-17V5, is often used to transport both military personnel and government officials to certain locations. In 2017, an Mi-17V5 crash led to the death of seven military personnel, The Associated Press reports. The Indian Air Force stated: "An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident."
