Why It Matters: DeepSeek is a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company that has rapidly emerged as a major competitor in the global AI market. Last week, DeepSeek launched an AI assistant that quickly became the most downloaded free app in the U.S. on the Apple App Store, surpassing tech giants like ChatGPT.

What To Know:

  • The AI assistant offers three primary functions: answering questions, internet-based search results and a “DeepThink” mode for step-by-step reasoning.
  • DeepSeek is designed to be more efficient by using fewer expensive computer chips to train and run its AI, which helps lower its costs. This cost-saving approach has made DeepSeek a strong competitor in the AI industry, challenging big companies like OpenAI, Google and Meta.
  • DeepSeek’s rapid success reflects China’s efforts to establish itself as a powerhouse in advanced technologies. While its rise has sparked interest, it has also raised concerns about censorship and data privacy, as user data is stored on servers within China.

In response to the rise of DeepSeek, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Gov on Tuesday, a special version of its chatbot designed for U.S. government agencies to ensure a more secure, U.S.-based alternative.
