Iryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way.
Spokesperson for the family of the victim, Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old refugee from Ukraine who was fatally stabbed August 22 while on North Carolina public transit. Zarutska was pronounced dead at the scene, and police arrested the suspect on the light rail platform.
Why It Matters: The suspect faces state charges of first-degree murder and federal charges of “committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system.” If convicted, he could face life in prison or the death penalty. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson said that “federal charges are necessary to protect the public and ensure confidence in our transportation systems.” The victim’s family called for stronger transit safety measures, saying, “We are committed to making sure this never happens again.” In response, the Charlotte Public Transit System announced increased security and surveillance. The suspect had been arrested 14 times prior and had a known schizophrenia diagnosis.
