I don’t think anyone wants to see another war on the European continent and there is no reason why that has to occur.

Press Secretary John Kirby for the Dept. of Defense on the Pentagon mobilizing up to 8500 troops in support of NATO.
  • Up to 8500 troops do not yet have missions or deployment plans.
  • However, the Pentagon emphasized that these units have “heightened readiness” to respond to a “range of contingencies.”
  • Ukraine is not a member of NATO. However, other eastern European countries (such as Poland) are – and there’s been concern of Russia moving west more aggressively. Russia has raised concerns that NATO has made moves more aggressively east.
  • Why It Matters: The U.S. says Russia is showing no signs of de-escalating a build-up of troops in and around Belarus & Ukraine, threatening to invade Ukraine. The Pentagon says troop readiness is simply in support of a defensive alliance and protecting other NATO nations. This announcement by the Pentagon is a sign of escalation.
