I have repeatedly stated that I have a completely open mind to either possibility and that if definitive evidence becomes available to validate or refute either theory, I will ready accept it.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert when the COVID-19 pandemic began, in a House hearing on Monday referring to the possibility of the virus developing in nature and jumping from animals to humans versus the idea it leaked from a Chinese laboratory.

Why It Matters: Dr. Fauci helped lead the nation’s COVID-19 response while serving as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases before retiring in 2022. He testified before a GOP-led House subcommittee on Monday, facing questions regarding his role in allegedly covering up the virus’s origins and using his personal email for government business. Dr. Fauci called allegations of him trying to cover up COVID-19 origins “simply preposterous.” Members of the Congress subcommittee interviewed Dr. Fauci behind closed doors for 14 hours in January, with this week’s hearing marking the first time he appeared before a GOP-led panel to answer pandemic-related questions.

The hearing occurred as part of a GOP-led subcommittee that has spent more than a year looking into the U.S. response to COVID-19 and “whether U.S.-funded research in China may have played any role in how it started” (The Associated Press). So far, the panel has not found evidence of Dr. Fauci leading a cover-up of information or that the virus leaked from a Chinese laboratory.
