Political scientist Michael McDonald, University of Florida, who oversees the elections project which tracks election statistics. Nearly 40 million Americans have cast their ballot, surpassing the 2018 midterm early voting total.

Why It Matters: Early voting for midterm elections reached a record high over the weekend, though exact numbers are still to be determined as mail-in votes are received.

Important Context: In the 2014 midterm elections, about 30% of ballots were cast by early voting or by mail. That number reached about 40% in 2018 and will increase this year as final votes are tallied.
