Excessive Heat Warning Impacting 17 Million People

Potentially dangerous heat is expected today & tomorrow in parts of TX before spreading west into the U.S. southwest and the CA Central Valley by mid-week.

The National Weather Service (NWS) on X on Monday. While summer does not officially begin for a few more weeks, the NWS warns of excessive heat and record-breaking temperatures for the year in coming days.

Why It Matters: More than 17 million people are under an excessive heat warning across California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. Earlier in the week, Texas experienced widespread heat atypical for this time of year. The higher temperatures exist because of a heat dome – which is caused by a combination of several factors leading to extreme and persistent heat over a location. The National Ocean Service summarizes they occur “when the atmosphere traps hot ocean air like a lid or cap.”
