Hopefully we’re going to refloat the Dali in the next few days. We still anticipate to be on time to open full channel by the end of the month.

United States Coast Guard Capt. David O’Connell after officials set off explosives to remove a portion of the Francis Scott Key Bridge from the cargo ship, the Dali, on Monday. The Baltimore bridge collapsed after being struck by the Dali in March, killing six construction workers on the bridge at the time of the collision.

Why It Matters: On Monday, officials demolished a major portion of the bridge that was resting on the ship as they work to free the ship from the wreckage. Officials feel “very pleased” with the outcome of the demolition, and divers will be doing examinations to ensure nothing fell and damaged the body of the ship as they move closer to refloating the vessel and moving it to the port. The ship’s 21 crew members have remained on board since the incident, including during the demolition of the bridge, to help maintain operations of the vessel as well as participating in an ongoing federal investigation.
