FDA Warns Of Lead-Tainted Cinnamon Products

March 7, 2024

… the FDA has determined that the ground cinnamon products … contain elevated levels of lead and that prolonged exposure to these products may be unsafe.

The United States Food and Drug Administration in an announcement on Wednesday advising consumers to throw out certain cinnamon products. The impacted products can be purchased at U.S. discount retailers such as Family Dollar and Dollar Tree.

Why It Matters: The FDA advises consumers to throw away and refrain from buying the affected ground cinnamon products, as they contain “elevated levels of lead” which may be dangerous (especially for children). The agency is also urging suppliers to voluntarily recall the cinnamon products. The news comes following an FDA “targeted survey” which was launched into cinnamon products at discount stores after “an October 2023 recall of lead-tainted cinnamon applesauce pouches that sickened nearly 500 U.S. children,” The Associated Press explains.

Affected cinnamon products include:

  • The La Fiesta brand from La Superior and SuperMercados
  • Marcum brand from Save A Lot stores
  • MK brands from SF Supermarket
  • Swad brand from Patel Brothers
  • El Chilar brand from La Joya Morelense
  • Supreme Tradition brand from Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores
