First-Ever OTC Birth Control Pill Hits Shelves This Week

There’s no requirement that they need to do that [speak to a pharmacist], but it’s great to have as many options as available for people.

Principal research scientist at the Guttmacher Institute, Megan Kavanaugh, on an over-the-counter birth control pill that is arriving in stores and online this week.

Why It Matters: Opill is the first over-the-counter birth control pill available in the United States, and beginning this week, it will be available at Walgreens (also available for pickup as well as delivery). The pill is also available on Opill’s website and Amazon, and will hit CVS’ website and app later this month – arriving on the pharmacy’s shelves in April. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Opill last year; no prescription is required nor is there an age restriction.
