They’re not out of the woods by any means yet, but it’s definitely starting to look a little better for those folks there.

Chris Zoller, Fish Wildfire Operations, on the Fish Wildfire near Sundance, Wyoming. As of Monday morning, the fire was 0% contained.

Why It Matters: About 20 people so far have been evacuated from their homes due to the wildfire, Zoller said. As of Monday, the fire had spread to cover more than 500 acres and was 0% contained.

  • Initially, air crews flew above the fire and dropped fire retardant over the flames. However, Zoller explained responders are now using an “air attack” approach; pilots fly above the fire and communicate with firefighters on the ground, telling them where to go in order to best respond to the changing wildfire.
  • Officials have said that while the fire was human-caused and began on private land, it is still under investigation.

Big Picture: “Events [in the U.S.] have transitioned from a wildfire season to a wildfire year,” one risk-control expert says, as The Wall Street Journal reports: “Every state but Delaware had wildfires last year.”
