  • On Wednesday, Pres. Biden ordered that flags across the nation be flown at half-staff in memory of Madeleine Albright, "a scholar, teacher, bestselling author, and later accomplished business woman," who passed away from cancer at age 84.
  • American flags can be flown at half-staff to signify mourning for a former government or public official, as well as for foreign dignitaries. U.S. flags can also be flown at half-staff to mark national memorials (such as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day) or to mark recent tragic events. In February 2021, Pres. Biden ordered that flags be flown at half-staff in remembrance of 500,000 American lives lost to COVID-19.
  • While the U.S. Flag Code grants the president the authority to order that flags be flown at half-staff for occasions of national remembrance, it also allows state governors to do so for local remembrance. In addition, heads of federal departments and agencies may order that the U.S. flag be flown at half-staff "on buildings, grounds, or naval vessels under their jurisdiction …"

Big Picture: In remembrance of Madeleine Albright, the first woman to serve as the U.S. secretary of state, American flags across the nation will be flown at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, March 27. Pres. Biden ordered for flags to be put at half-staff "at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories," as well as all U.S. facilities abroad, "including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations."
