Former U.S. President (and current President-elect) Donald Trump in an acceptance speech as votes began indicating a win. Today The Associated Press called the election, announcing former President Trump as the winner of the 2024 presidential race.
Why It Matters: According to multiple media outlets, former President Trump has won the 2024 presidential election and will become the 47th president of the United States. President-elect Trump, who served as the nation’s 45th president, is the first former president to win back the White House in *non-consecutive* terms since Grover Cleveland won a second, non-consecutive term in 1892. At 78, President-elect Trump is also the oldest person ever elected to the office of U.S. President. Meanwhile, his running mate, Senator JD Vance, becomes one of the youngest people in history to be elected to the office of Vice President.
As of now, Vice President Kamala Harris has not spoken publicly since media outlets began to call final election results, though her campaign said she will speak at some point today. Meanwhile, ballot counting continues, and we anticipate additional calls for swing states such as Michigan, Arizona and Nevada.
