Why It Matters: This was former President Trump’s first major campaign event after being federally indicted; he is currently the 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner. On Friday, the former President was federally indicted on 37 counts of felony charges related to allegations he unlawfully retained and mishandled classified documents (including documents related to national security) after he left the White House, and then conspired to obstruct justice by hiding those classified documents from federal authorities. If found guilty on all charges, he could face decades in prison.
Pres. Trump has denied the allegations; he will be arraigned in a federal court in Miami on Tuesday. (Arraignment = The first step in a criminal prosecution when a defendant is brought before a judge to be formally charged with a crime. At this initial hearing, the defendant learns more about the charges against them and is asked to plead guilty or not guilty.)
