Attorney General Pamela Bondi on the indictment of the former head of the FBI, James Comey, on charges related to obstructing a congressional investigation and making a false statement.
Why It Matters: The former FBI director, who served during both the Obama administration and the first Trump administration faces charges related to testimony he provided the Senate on the 2016 election.
From The Associated Press: “The indictment makes Comey the first former senior government official involved in one of Trump’s chief grievances, the long-concluded investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, to face prosecution.”
Just a reminder: The federal grand jury consists of private American citizens who weigh a case presented to them by prosecutors. The indictment, or charges for a crime, will come *if* a grand jury votes to indict – not if a prosecutor wants to act unilaterally and files charges. In America, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
