Germany Chancellor begins diplomacy efforts in Ukraine and Russia

February 14, 2022

We are experiencing a very, very serious threat to peace in Europe.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Twitter as he lands in Ukraine for meetings with the prime minister; he meets Tuesday with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
  • The chancellor’s meetings come after a face-to-face meeting at the White House with Pres. Biden last week. The White House warned only days ago that an invasion of Russian into Ukraine could happen at any moment.
  • Germany has sent additional troops to NATO member nations as a show of support.
  • Russia has more than 130,000 troops at the border with Ukraine/Belarus but denies an invasion is imminent.
  • Why It Matters: The visits are a continuation of high-level diplomacy between the West, Russia and Ukraine. Germany is a major consumer of Russian natural gas – which is both a vulnerability (since Germany is dependent on outside fuel sources) and a strength for leverage in negotiations to lower tensions.
