I see a shadow on my stage, and so no matter how you measure, it’s six more weeks of winter weather.
Groundhog Club Vice President Dan McGinley reading the scroll after Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. According to the groundhog, there will be six more weeks of winter.
Why It Matters: Groundhog Day 2023 commenced on Thursday morning in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania — a small town about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Phil saw his shadow, indicating that there will be six more weeks of winter. Despite the prediction of more cold weather, since the tradition began in 1887, Groundhog Day reminds us that no matter how long and dark the season, spring will always come.
- How Does It Work? When Phil surfaces at first light, the presence of a shadow determines a prediction for an early spring or weeks more of winter. If he sees his shadow, then the next six weeks will bring winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, it indicates an early spring.
- Phil’s Record: He has gotten his weather prediction right about 40% of the time over the past 136 years.
