I broke my baby toe last night. I caught it on one of the many moving boxes still strewn hazardously around our home.
.
And so, 2019 begins & ends pretty much the same way: at an ER. Last year, only weeks pregnant, I had the flu. Both times, I’ve called @drdarria ;). Deep down I wondered: What’s next in this crazy story? This doesn’t look exactly as I pictured.
.
But I must have Someone watching out for me. Otherwise, these opportunities to glean lessons from hardships would not come so fast & furious.

I wanted to end 2019 with a “letter from the editor.” Presenting at #SXSW was such a huge moment that I wanted to find that perfect photo to share with you. But my 5-yr-old had other plans, & climbed onto my lap to ask what I was doing.
.
As I searched my phone, I snapped this photo of the moment transpiring right in front of me ~ sharing my passion with my first born, who inspired me to think of news delivery differently. My treasured heart picture of America, with each part contributing to the whole. A photo of @bergdorfs by a NYC street artist – from a city I love, where I attended journalism school, faced so much rejection, & worked my way to a national anchor position. On the edges, tissue paper, hair ties, & receipts of a disorganized mom. A notebook with ideas. An Elmo coloring book. A coaster with the Golden Gate bridge from my home town. Outside my window, a Texas oak tree, history in its roots, providing shade that will far outlive me.
.
This is so much better than the photo I searched for – so much better than what I pictured. Building this business has presented many challenges. There’s no calling in sick. No outside funding. As of right now, no revenue, no guarantees – just the service & faith that if we deliver news differently, if we fill a void, we can build this dream.
.
It’s not glossy. There’s tears & even some broken bones. But the picture emerging is so much better than I could’ve imagined. Thank YOU for making it possible. Happy New Year!
