Hearing on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena

UAPs are unexplained, it’s true. But they are real. They need to be investigated. And any threats they pose need to be mitigated.

Congressman André Carson (D-IN) in opening statements before Pentagon officials testified to a House subcommittee on unidentified aerial phenomena (also called UAP).

• Why It Matters: This hearing marks the first time Congress has publicly heard testimony on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) in over 50 years. A classified hearing followed the public session.
• During the public hearing, Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security Ronald Moultrie (the Pentagon's top intelligence official) and Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray testified about the Department of Defense's processes for handling military and pilot reports of UAPs — which they noted have now grown to about 400 total in an updated report in which incidents date back to approx. 2004.
• Last year, the Pentagon directed Moultrie to establish a new task force, called the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG), which is focusing on collecting more data to better understand UAPs. During the hearing, Moultrie and Bray shared how they are working to build this organization.
