The ship will forever symbolize our nation’s strength, innovation, and resilience. We wish her ‘fair winds and following seas’ on her historic journey to her new home.

President of the SS United States Conservancy, Susan Gibbs, commenting on the ship’s legacy and future. Gibbs is also the granddaughter of the naval architect who designed the vessel.

Why It Matters: A historic ocean liner departed from south Philadelphia on Wednesday, beginning its final voyage toward becoming the world’s largest artificial reef. The SS United States is being towed to Mobile, Alabama, for planned prep work before officials eventually sink it off Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Context: In 1952, the 1,000-foot vessel set the transatlantic speed record on its maiden voyage, averaging 36 knots and crossing the Atlantic in just over three days. Initially designed as both a luxury liner for passengers and a potential military transport, the ship has since spent decades docked on south Philadelphia’s Delaware River, passing through multiple private owners unable to afford its restoration.

What To Know:

  • Officials in Okaloosa County, Florida, hope the ship will be a leading attraction among the county’s 500+ artificial reefs, boosting local tourism and potentially generating millions in annual revenue.
  • The plan faced a four-month delay due to concerns from the U.S. Coast Guard that the ship wasn’t stable enough for relocation.
  • The extensive process of cleaning, transporting and sinking the ship is expected to take at least 18 months. Officials estimate that the deal to purchase the ship could eventually exceed $10 million.
