I have worked in refugee emergencies for almost 40 years, and rarely have I seen an exodus as rapid as this one.
U.N. High Commissioner Filippo Grandi on the growing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
- The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says in the last week more than 2% of Ukraine’s population has been displaced (more than 1 million people).
- The speed is reportedly unprecedented. For context — it took 3 months for 1 million refugees to flee from Syria during the civil war.
- Why This Matters: Not only is this described as “an exodus without precedent in this century for its speed” but the expectation is that the crisis will worsen.
