The [NOAA’s] outlook predicts a near-normal hurricane season …
Dr. Rick Spinrad, Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), on the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season that starts today, June 1, and runs through November 30th.
Why It Matters: NOAA is forecasting a range of 12 to 17 total named storms this season, of which five to nine could become hurricanes.
NOAA will use new technology like these specialized drones, dropped from hurricane hunting aircraft, to monitor storms.
The small, light-weight Altius-600 drones were first successfully deployed during Hurricane Ian in 2022; they have also been used by the military for intelligence gathering.
Scientists say the new technology like these drones will improve hurricane forecasting and help us better prepare communities for potential storms.
