Instagram, Facebook Restored Following Global Outage

Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone in a statement via X (formerly known as Twitter) after Meta’s social media platforms experienced an apparent worldwide outage on Tuesday morning.

Who: People worldwide were reported to be impacted, according to tracking website Downdetector and internet monitor NetBlocks.

What: Social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messanger and Threads were down for many users.

Where: Netblocks said via X that issues occurred in “multiple countries.”

When: Reports of outages on Downdetector began around 9:00 a.m. CT; about an hour later, reports began decreasing.

Why: Meta spokesperson attributed the outages to a “technical issue.”

Something To Consider: The Wall Street Journal reports, “Biden administration officials said they hadn’t seen specific or credible threats attempting to disrupt Super Tuesday’s elections, but were monitoring the outages.These outages aren’t uncommon. Glitches, sometimes short and others longer, can disrupt people’s ability to conduct business or interact with friends. Meta has said it has 3.19 billion daily active people on average across its apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.”
