Why It Matters: While no *new* bombshell headline was shared during the committee’s first primetime hearing concerning the events of January 6, 2021, the committee mapped out a clear picture of where their investigation will lead — pointing to former Pres. Trump as not only an instigator but potential accomplice in the riot.
The stakes: Whether the committee’s investigation will lead to potential criminal charges is TBD.
Important To Note: The committee showed a new video compilation of the events of January 6.
Critics Say: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who referenced the hearing as a “scam,” stated that “Speaker Pelosi’s Select Committee on January 6 is the most political and least legitimate committee in American history.”
Context: “Republicans blocked the formation of an independent body that could have investigated the Jan. 6 assault the way the 9/11 Commission probed the 2001 terror attack” (Associated Press).
